Cheek Fillers
As you age, your cheeks flatten and the skin begins to sag. This is caused by natural loss of volume in the cheek area, or what the experts call age-related midface volume loss. Cheek fillers such as Restylane, Sculptra, Revanesse or Juvederm are designed to add volume beneath the skin’s surface, which provides lift and contour to the cheek area.
Cheek fillers can provide an instant lift to the cheeks and improve cheek and facial proportions. Enhancing the mid-face is often the cornerstone in facial rejuvenation.
Cheek fillers can be used for:
- Replacing lost volume as occurs with ageing or weight loss – loss of cheek volume may contribute to flattening of facial contours. Fillers can be used to restore this lost volume.
- Enhancing cheek volume to improve facial balance and proportions – the volume of the cheeks may be depleted in comparison to other parts of the face. Cheek fillers can help to volumise and balance the cheeks in this situation.
- Support of the lower eyelid – volumising the (upper) cheek can improve the appearance of the lower eyelid. As the cheek loses volume with age, support of the ligaments of the lower eyelid is lost. Filler placed just under the lower eyelid in the upper cheek helps to support the lower eyelid. This reduces the appearance of eyebags or under-eye hollows.

Frequently Asked Questions
As a general rule of thumb, most patients require 1 syringe of dermal filler such as Restylane or Juvederm per decade of life to replace lost volume. For example, a client in his or her 40s would require 4 syringes in the cheeks (mid face) to start. This is just for replacing age related volume loss, not augmentation. 50 years old? You’ll need about 5 syringes of filler, and so forth. In combination with age, lifestyle choices, such as smoking and sun exposure, can also affect how much filler you might need. If you are wanting an augmentation, then this would be addressed once the volume loss is replaced.
The majority of dermal fillers are made from Hyaluronic Acid and contain 1cc per syringe. Keep in mind that this means that there is only 1/5 of a teaspoon of filler in that 1cc syringe! This means that it takes FIVE full syringes to make a up a single teaspoon of filler.
After your cheek injections your dermal filler will settle over the next few weeks and form a layer at the base of your treatment area. Many clients find they need two or three sessions in order to layer filler on top of one another – until the filler no longer has room to sink – leaving you with a fuller look.
We cannot exactly predict how many sessions each individual will need to achieve their desired result. The results of your treatment durability and end results are influenced by several genetic and lifestyle factors completely out of our control. Aesthetics is an art process – not an exact science.
Are you ageing, have you had significant weight loss? If so chances are your face has also lost a lot of volume. When we lose volume in our face, this often makes us look older than we are or feel. One of the ways to correct this is to replenish the volume with dermal fillers. Dermal fillers such as Restylane, revanesse or juvederm help to replenish lost volume, as well as smooth out wrinkles and lines in the face. This recreates the appearance of youth and healthy skin.

POST-TREATMENT DERMAL FILLER INSTRUCTIONS
- Prevent infection: Avoid touching the treated area or applying with products for 6 hours following treatment. After that light makeup can be applied and the area can be gently washed with soap and water.
- Until the initial swelling and redness has resolved please do not expose the area to intense heat. This could be up to 2 weeks, ex: Tanning beds, sunbathing or extreme cold
- Please no strenuous exercise for 24-48 hours after your procedure as it can cause migration of filler, swelling and bruising.
- If you are using Aspirin, Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Aleve or any blood thinning medications, please be aware that this may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site.
- Arnica Montana tablets can be helpful to minimize the redness and swelling. Additionally, although uncommon, red or swollen small bumps may occur in some clients.
- The gel is quite movable for the first few days – do not press on it, try to sleep on your back. A neck pillow may assist.
- We would like to see you 1-2 weeks after treatment in order to repeat your personal photos and assess the outcome of the injections. Additional injections may be undertaken at an additional fee.
- Your new filler may take a little getting used to. Over the course of the next few weeks, it will settle into position and absorb water, improving the initial effect. Fillers usually last for 6-9 months, but they may last longer or shorter, depending on your metabolism
